GROVE GMK 5095, 100t class AT crane

GROVE GMK 5095 (GMK 5115 in the USA) is build as an alternative crane to GMK4100-L, to allow to use more counterweight in TAXI configuration. GMK5095 has very similar superstructure to GMK4100-L, which is placed on 5 axle chassis with wider outrigger base. This solution gives really excellent TAXI (12t / axle) abilities to GMK5095.
This crane was introduced in 2006, in production is since 2007.

Basic performances of the boom:
   Max. load: 100 tones on 2,5 m over rear
   Max. radius: 52 m with load of 1,4 tones
   Max. hook reach: 61 m with load of 8 tones on radius of 11 m

Basic performances of 17m luffing jib with the boom extended to maximum:
   Max. radius: 56 m with load of 0,8 tones (up to the height of 51 m)
   Max. hook reach: 77 m with load of 2,9 tones on radius of 12 m

Basic performances of 22 m luffing jib with the boom extended to maximum:

   Max. radius: 56 m with load of 0,7 tones (up to the height of 56 m)
   Max. hook reach: 81 m with load of 2,0 tones on radius of 13 m





Technical description of the GMK 5095 superstructure:

Boom
11,65 m to 60,0 m seven sections Megaform boom with TWIN-LOCK pinning. Elevated by 1 cylinder with safety valves. Boom angle from -1,5° to +82°. Seven sheaves boom head.

    10 / 17 m bi-fold swingaway jib, hydraulically offset from 5° to 40°, luffing move controlled from the operators cab
    3,3 m heavy duty jib, integrated to swingaway jib, max. capacity 33 tč

ECOS and EKS5 displays. Two spotlights under the front pane.
For EU countries it is equipped by requirements of the latest version of EN 13000 standard (light bar on the top of the cab and override key next to the right spot light.


Load moment and anti-two block system
Electronic safe load indicator EKS 5 Light. Load moment indicator with automatic cut-out and digital displays for actual and admissible load, radius, telescoping, jib, counterweight, outrigger position and other working conditions.

Slewing
360° continuous rotation, 2 slewing gears with axial piston motors, planetary reduction gear, automatic brake with foot operated release switch for free slew. Infinitely variable speed 0-1,9 rpm


Counterweight
Standard counterweight is 11,8t, fixed on the superstructure. Hydraulic removal system is controlled from the operators cab.
Additional 15,4t in variants of slabs for different axle load depending on local road regulations. Total counterweight is 27,2t.

10 tires with standard size 14.00 R25. Tires size 16.00R25 or 20.50R25 are optional. The tires can be mounted on steel or aluminium rims.

Steering
Each axle line is steered by 2 steering cylinders. In case of main pump failure there is automatic stand-by steering pump installed on the transfer case.
During on-road travel the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th axle are steered. For all-wheel steer and crab steer axles 4 and 5 are disconnected from road travel mode to be operated independently, by a switch.

Brakes
   Service brake: Pneumatic dual-circuit brake, acting on all wheels. Drum brakes on all wheels. (1st axle line with Duplex brake, 2nd to 5th axle line with Simplex brake.) Single chamber air dryer with integrated pressure regulator.
   Permanent brake: Exhaust brake with fixed throttle valve
   Parking brake: Pneumatically operated spring-loaded brakes are acting from 2nd to 5th axle line.

GROVE GMK 5110-1, 110t class AT crane

GROVE GMK 5110-1 (GMK 5135 in the USA) is a follower of very successful model GMK 5100. The idea was to make crane with similar boom length, which is stronger, shorter and using all state of the art technologies. The new crane design was done successfully, with the all good features (Megatrak, Megaform, TwinLock) plus new cabins, new control system, upgraded installations and new engines. The GMK5110-1 is about 1,5 m shorter than GMK 5100 with same wheel base. GMK 5110-1 was introduced in 2007, in production is since 2008.

Basic performances of the boom:
   Max. load: 110 tones on radius of 2,5 m
   Max. radius: 46 m with load of 3,2 tones
   Max. hook reach: 50,5 m with load of 16,5 tones on radius of 8 m

100t class GROVE AT cranes overview




There are 4 models of 100 t class GROVE AT cranes in current production range. Let’s have a brief look on them and find what is each of it good at.

GROVE GMK5110-1 is actually a bit stronger crane, 110t class model, but still can to be added in this comparison. It is a 5 axles crane with 50,77 m boom (“O” Megaform, TwinLock). Max counterweight is 40,1t. Taxi configuration (12t per axle) is with 11t of counterweight, 10x8x10, 16.00R25, 11/18 jib and 20t hookblock.

GROVE GMK5095 is 100t class 5 axles crane with 60 m boom (“O” Megaform, TwinLock). Max counterweight is 27,1t. Taxi configuration (12t per axle) is with 11,7t of counterweight, 10x8x10, 16.00R25, 10/17 jib and 40t hookblock / or 13,7t of counterweight, 10x8x10, 14.00R25, 10/17 jib and 20t hookblock.

Crane types GMK 5110-1 and GMK 5095 share similar chassis, also GMK 4100 and GMK 4100-L share similar chassis. I would call them twins.

From total length the GMK 5110-1 is the longest from all, as its boom base section is the longest one. When you look at the chassis length then those  GMK 4100 and GMK 4100-L offer very compact chassis with incredibly small turning radius (when all wheels steering is used).

5 axle cranes (GMK 5110-1 and GMK 5095) can carry 12 tons of taxi weight more than 4 axle cranes. It gives advantage of adding more equipment, more counterweight and build stronger boom.

For maxi configuration (full counterweight) is clearly visible how strong is the GMK 5110-1. It beats the other types very.

When we have a look on GMK 5095 (60 m boom), 4100-L (60 m boom) and 4100 (52 m boom), we can see that 60 m boom is little weaker in short radius and gets stronger in longer radius. The 52 m boom is stronger on short radius up to 10 m.

The higher weight of GMK 5095 is helpful when the crane works on long radius. This doesnt matter if a crane works to the heigh.

When cranes are sent to work in TAXI configuration only (12 t on axle), with no additional counterweigh, loadcharts are affected by lack of counterweight mass. All 100t class GROVE cranes have still enough counterweight in TAXI configuration for quite good work.

The GMK 5110-1 wins on short distance for heavy lifts, as the boom is just the strongest from compared. 

The GMK 5095 is similar to GMK 5110-1 when the working radius gets over 10 m. When the working radius exceeds 18 m, the loadchart of GMK 5095 is even stronger than 5110-1 had. The GMK 5095 offers more variants for TAXI configuration limit. It is is either 13,7t of counterweight, 10x8x10, 14.00R25, 10/17 jib and 20t hookblock or 11,7t of counterweight, 10x8x10, 16.00R25, 10/17 jib and 40t hookblock.

The GMK 4100 and GMK 4100-L are very similar in the TAXI lifting capacity. The main advantage for GMK 4100-L is that the crane offers 8 m longer boom, so you do not need to erect jib that often. The GML 4100-L can reach the TAXI configuration only without jib, on wheels 14.00R25 and drive 8x4x8. If you need 16.00R25 or 8x8x8 and care of 12t per axle, you better choose aluminium rims for this crane and still ask your dealer to check the crane weight distribution on axles.

What is good point for GMK 4100 is that this model can reach TAXI configuration when very well equipped. 12t per axle is still reached when the GMK4100 is equpped by drive 8x8x8, jib 10/17 and 16.00 R25 wheels.

Every dealer should have access to the weight configurator, so you can discuss with them what configuration to use to be sure you will not break any law in your country.

All those cranes are equipped by Mercedes Benz engines and Mercedes Benz gearboxes. All MB engines are the most modern power generator build with state of the art technology. It gives the cranes the best fuel consumption rate and also fulfills all latest legal surprises given by governments around the entire World. So this is great.

All those cranes are also equipped by Megatrak suspension, which allows them to change truly the clearance under the axles. Plus all the drive shafts are aligned stable under chassis, with no any additional forces and stress. I can confirm that there is not gonna be any general repair on drive for all the crane life, if maintenance of drive is respected. All wheels are always toughing ground thanks to this system. This is not really happening on competitor cranes always, especially on more axle cranes. No such issue on GROVE GMKs.

All wheels are steered. The cranes can turn on really small radius; it can crab to sides with all wheels touching ground. (There is some competition which has to lift up one axle to go crab, which brings weight redistribution on other axles, that is not happening on GROVE cranes).

The ropes are long enough to make 3 parts of line when the boom is fully extended on all models.

When you see all those information, you might feel that the best deal of all Manitowoc 100t class cranes is GMK 5095. I will agree. If your country has no obstacles for the crane taxi weight (60t) or its total length (13, 47 m), this crane gives you the best taxi performances from all 100t class cranes.

If you work up to 40 m height and radius up to 20 m, your favorite 100t crane might be GMK 4100. The 52 m boom is strong, undercarriage is very compact and as the boom is lighter. And the crane is cheapest from all compared.

60 m boom (GMK 4100-L or GMK 5095) is great when you need to work really high pretty often. You do not need to erect the jib and if so, you have + 8 m more thank on the other compared types.

If you are a big company and counterweight transport is no issue for you, you will choose the exact type for desired work, equipped just as you need. So I hope this comparison helps small companies who try to choose best 100t class crane for their fleet.
